Fall Gardening Tips

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By R Birch Fall is a great time to be outdoors in the garden, the temperatures are perfect and the colors can be amazing. If you’re looking for projects which will extend the gardening season and give you a reason to be outside, fear not, there’s still plenty to do. As the season moves along, perennials and annuals should be deadheaded, even right though the early fall months. Further along, towards late fall, these plants need to be cut back to the ground as they begin to die back. Though this can wait until spring I like to do it in the late fall, there are too many other projects to worry about in the spring. Late fall is the ideal time to cut back your perennial garden as some perennials, though finished blooming, have great fall colors. Let them stand until the end of the season. Some, such as Balloon Flower and Astilbe turn beautiful shades of yellow and gold. Others retain their striking form and develop interesting seed heads, such as black eyed Susan and Sedum “Autumn Joy”. As the annuals die or begin to look a bit spent, remove them and add them to your compost pile. There a few fall blooming plants that you can replace them with . Aster and chrysanthemum are the most common. They can add vibrant color to your garden up until late November. Avoid pruning shrubs too late into the season, this can often encourage new growth which may be susceptible to winter kill if it did not have tine harden off. After deciduous shrubs become dormant in the winter pruning is fine for general shaping. Examine your garden, are there any shrubs which are outgrowing their allotted space? Fall is a great time for transplanting shrubs. The cooler weather results in less stress for a newly transplanted shrub. There’s generally more rain in the fall as well which also helps reduce stress. Plant new shrubs during the fall for the same reasons. Especially since you may be able to find great deals during late season sales at your local nursery. Be sure to stake new trees and shrubs which may vulnerable during winter snows. Plant bulbs before the ground freezes, they’re are a great way to add early spring color to the garden. Bulbs are also great way to naturalize your landscape. Daffodils, scilla, and bluebells are wonderful when planted beneath a large shade tree. Tulips and hyacinths are better suited to for formal settings such as a perennial border. After the ground is frozen, cover plants which require winter protection with hay or evergreen branches, especially in areas that are cold but have little snow. Perennials will benefit from winter protection. Though things seem to be winding down as the winter approaches, a quick walk through the garden will reveal a number of project still to be done. Mobile Auto Detailers and Newspaper Companies as Clientele

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Lance Winslow If you are a mobile auto detailer or mobile car wash company you might wish to think of attaining the local newspaper as a strategic client for your services. Usually newspapers have large staffs, especially daily newspapers. They do everything in house to save costs. They obviously have lots of cars to clean and this means plenty of customers. In fact as a mobile auto detailer or car washer this could be a half a days stop on your route or even a full day depending on the size or the paper. Think of the employees of a newspaper? Newsroom/Editorial Staff Artwork/Layout/Graphic Department Circulation Department Classified Department Printing Department Accounting Department If you are fortunate enough to have a daily newspaper in your area, you probably already know their benefit. They make a great weekly stop and have lots of fleet vehicles to wash. And if you dont have the fleet contract but do wash cars for the staff/personnel, you will eventually pick up the fleet work. Its inevitable. If you know the staff and all the reporters, its easy to get press releases printed. But press releases arent all a newspaper has to offer. There are many other uses to explore such as: Inserts Advertising Calendar Of Events Letters To The Editor Feature Stories Weekly Stops Fleet Washing Classified Ads To Find Labor Press releases As a matter of fact, almost everything you need to know about your community is there. Free publicity has always been the advantage of such small businesses as mobile auto service companies. Mobile detailing is an ultra-high visibility small business and the more visibility you have the more money you will make. As long as you are trying to find good companies to put on your business cleaning route, may as well kill two-birds with one stone and sign up the newspaper; makes dollars and sense. Is Your Handshake Creating Or Killing Instant Attraction?

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

By Christine Akiteng Most people are blissfully unaware of the very subtle energetic messages their hands communicate about them and how those very brief seconds of physical contact could mean the difference between a great first date and one that is doomed even before it starts! In just five seconds or less your handshake gives away information about you in these six ways: 1. Appearance of the hand People who take pride in their hands tend to take pride in who they are - torn nails and dirt under even well trimmed nails raises doubts about a persons self esteem. 2. Texture of the hand While soft and delicately textured hands say you are an ideas person with probably a desk job, a slight degree of roughness conveys a sense of practicality, a person capable of making things happen. 3. Moistness of the hand The more anxiety, stress and tension the more moist the hand. Most people find moist hands uncomfortable to shake. A very dry and cold hand on the other hand speaks of someone who is emotionally dry and cold. 4. The pressure you use Bone-crushing the other persons hand conveys aggressive and hostile personality or someone who lacks sensitivity which in turn creates fear rather than attraction. A limp lifeless handshake gives the impression of a weak or lackluster personality that lacks self-confidence and is easily manipulated. 5. Contact time A handshake that is briefer than expected conveys lack of enthusiasm, interest, warmth and empathy. A handshake lasting slightly longer than expected communicates interest, attention and desire to get to know. This positive message becomes less and less positive when the handshake is over prolonged to the point that it becomes unpleasant. 6. Type of handshake A person who has a habit of placing his/her hand on top during a handshake is more likely to be perceived as aggressive, dominant, controlling and demanding, while the one who has a habit of placing his/her hand under another hand is perceived as submissive, compliant and approval seeking (needy). An overly eager pumper is perceived as insecure and self-doubting, while the person who barely touches is perceived as unresponsive and boring, to put it mildly. Such is the sensitivity of the human handshake. Even when the effect operates on the opposite sex at a sub-conscious level, as it frequently does, the overall effect is so powerful. You might also want to check out the article: Creating Instant Attraction With A Handshake (articles section of my website). The handshake hints listed will give you plenty to practice for when you next meet that person who churns your heart. Better still, they’ll create interactions that will bring out your human warmth, making you instantly attractive to the person you shake hands with. When else, unless you make it to the hand-holding stage, will you hold that person’s hand again? So without becoming obsessional about it, make your first handshake count. Basic Fundamentals of a Successful Marriage

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

By Tomira L. Rosser A successful marriage is not impossible to attain. There are thousands of couples that have been successfully married for decades. Do they have some great secret that no one else has? No, they have learned the basic fundamentals of marriage and these fundamentals have led them to a successful marriage. Here is a list of ten tips that will help you achieve or maintain a successful marriage. Support – You have to support one another. Without support, the relationship will fall apart. Tolerance – Tolerance is a big thing. If you cannot be tolerant of each other… there will be major problems. Communication – Communication is a must. Whether it is a problem, a happy thought, or anything on your mind, it must be relayed to your partner. Realistic expectations – Don’t be unrealistic. No one is perfect and neither are you. The sooner both of you realize this, the better. Sense of humor – You have to have a sense of humor. Even if it is a small one, everything can be funny at some time. Respect – If you don’t respect each other, then there is no need to be together. You have to respect each other’s opinions, beliefs, views, and wants. Problem solve together – Work on things together. Start with small problems like fixing the kitchen sink; it will help you work together when a serious problem arises. Enjoy one another – You have to enjoy one another’s company. Do this by doing small things such as cooking dinner for each other, doing each others work, and other things that make a small impression. The more this is done, the more enjoyable everything will be. Have fun together – Do anything that gets both of your minds off of problems in your life. Go to the beach, go running, and go on vacation. If you can get away from everything once in a while, it will remind you how much you mean to each other. These are just a few tips that will help you achieve a successful marriage. If you try these in small steps, they will take on bigger steps on their own. Don’t try to do everything at one time, because it will not work and you will end up discouraged and frustrated. This article was written by Tomira L. Rosser of CreativePenz Copywriting Services. Gardening For Birds

Monday, February 25th, 2008

By Ronald F. Patterson What a cruel trick the weather is playing on us. WE HAVE SNOW ! ! ! A bit depressing for us outdoor types. Yet, what better time to cheer myself up by writing to you. Karen is in the kitchen right now. Pookie (Putta) is leaning on me while I give him some attention. Who knows where the cats are. Yolonda is in her room folding cloths for her mom. The feeders are busier right now with the nasty weather, too bad the windowsare closed again. Some good news for me…………. my mom is back in her apartment aftera few weeks in the hospital and therapy. I’m a mama’s boy so that was a bit taxing on me. Last week I told you about the yard where I grew up. My dad passed away 20 years ago, but my mom kept the “Ole Homestead”for another 15 years. With her kids busy raising families of their own, the yard didn’t receive a lotof attention. Yet, the yard and wildlife flourished. Mom added a humming bird garden off the back patio and would sit out thereon milder days and summer evenings and watch her little jewels. Her birds would hardly flinch when we moved. When filling her feeders, as soon as I turned my back the birds would show as fast as they left. A small wooded area sat about 75 yards from our house. I believe the yardbecame an extension of the woods. As things grew, so did the collection of birds and wildlife. HOW TO DOUBLE THE NUMBER OF BIRDS COMING TO YOUR YARD Remember, where you live makes a difference in what you can plant and thevarieties of birds you will attract. However, planting for birds will double the number of birds coming to your yard. Here is a small list of trees for birds: Attracting Birds: Trees Native trees work best, though not a total requirement. Some introduced specimens have been around long enough that plants and birds have adapted. Look for trees that are zone hardy where you live. Here is a zone map from USDA for North America:National Arboretum - USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map If you need some help, talk to your local garden center or better yet - a Certified Nurseryman in your area. Speak with a professional who can assist in planting guidelines and requirements; such as sun or shade, will a tree tolerate wet feet. What about fertilizer? LET’S TAKE A WALK! It’s a nice day today, how about you and I go for a walk in a local park witha wooded area or find us an Arboretum. Do you notice the canopies of the trees? Do you see the brakes in the shaded areas? The lower growing trees and shrubs. Do you see the varieties of ground cover and under brush? The wild flowers in bloom today are food tomorrow. Can you hear the birds singing in the trees? Did you notice the chickadee following us as we went down the trail? I enjoyed this walk with you. Let’s do this again a few more times. Every couple of months just to see whatnature is offering the birds. WHAT IS NEXT Remember, now, to start with what you have. Make your current trees and shrubs a focal point for now. Backyard habitats take time and are years in the making. Do what your budget, time, and body will allow. This is a very important point, so let me say it again here: Do what your budget, time, and body will allow. Youll experience the most joy backyard birding if you use this approach. Also, look for sales. Do any of your friends have snips of bushes you could root? How about a family member or friend that has a few extra trees growing in a field? Ask if you could dig some up. Explain what you plan to do. Remember, it is illegal to dig up any wild trees or flowers on public or private land without permission first. Make a list of what you have and don’t have. Make another list of what you would like to plant for your new birdscape. You might even mention to your neighbors what you plan on doing and dare suggest it become a neighborhood event. I get excited talking to you about birds and nature. Wouldn’t it be nice to give back what we get from our surroundings? Until next time my friend. Have a blessed week and always SMILE. How to Find Unique Wedding Gifts

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

By Monique Hawkins You know a bride-to-be and her groom. You desire to give a gift that is different from everyone else because you want to be totally unique! Visiting the wedding registry at the local Wal-Mart or Target to choose a gift would be Ok, but hardly the stand out and unique gift you desire. If this sounds like you, here are some tips to come up with awesome and ultimate unique wedding gift ideas. Before you start off on your hunt, ask yourself the following questions: -How well do you know the couple? -What kind of things do they like to do? -What kind of honeymoon will they have? -Are they outgoing? Reserved? Adventuresome? -What kind of lifestyle do they have? These types of questions can give you ideas for a unique wedding gift that would be a perfect fit for the happy couple. Here are additional wedding gift ideas to consider: 1. Gift Certificates. Giving a gift certificate for activities the bride and groom can enjoy prior to or after the wedding usually is a great wedding gift idea. For example, a spa coupon would be a much talked about and appreciated pre-wedding gift. Since weddings can be quite stressful, a relaxing day at the spa would be a huge stress releaser. 2. Give a home spa basket. In addition to giving the couple a coupon for the spa, you also could consider purchasing the products yourself and placing them in a special “home spa” basket. Special products to include in the basket can be monogrammed robes, towels, and a few other relaxing items, like candles, bath and body lotions, and of course, some romantic music. Make sure you use scents and music that are their favorites! 3. Give a wooden keepsake box. It is normal for memories to fade as the years go by. Therefore, why not consider a wooden keepsake box? In this special box could go marriage license, special photos, place cards, vows, and all those other special keepsakes that often get lost as time passes. Also, pictures of pre-wedding events such as the bridal shower, bachelor or bacherolette parties, honeymoon, rehearsal dinner, etc., could go in the special box. 4. Give a silver picture frame. Think about giving a silver-plated picture frames. The happy couple will love this gift idea! You can engrave the couple’s names and the wedding date for a treasured memory on the picture frame. 5. Give a etched Glass Wedding Invitation - Have their wedding invitation, or other special verse engraved on a glass sculpture. This type of unique wedding gift will be treasured for years to come. Also, you can get the actual invitation, and mount it on a glass plate and finish it with matching colored paint. 6. Give a honeymoon photo album - this could be made out of wood, with a special message like something like “Our Special Honeymoon” engraved on the cover would be a great way to capture memories too! Now, you are well equipped to give the ultimate unique wedding gift! How to Properly Plan for Successful Weight Loss

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

By Jim O’Neill Before taking actions in any problem we encounter, there should always be a plan first. That is, if we want to come up with positive results. You wouldn’t want to enter a battle without preparing how to defeat the enemy, would you? Attempting a task without planning is like building a house without a blueprint or playing against a basketball team without planed plays with your teammates. How could you expect a good outcome? Weight loss is not at all different from the above mentioned plan-necessary situations. It also involves taking actions in proper ways that need to be perfectly planned in order to bring satisfying results. Here are the four key elements you will for making your weight loss plan a success. Setting a Goal: Okay, so your weight is somewhere around 20% above the considered normal for your height. You tend to eat more than 5 regular meals a day. You’re certain that you’re obese or at least overweight. Now, the question is, where do you want your weight to be?Setting a goal is the first step in planning for weight loss. Know what you want to accomplish. This way, the road you are taking is clear. You can keep track of your journey and whether or not you are going along in the right direction. With a goal in mind, you are always motivated to finish a task, or in some cases, to start doing it. Be Definite: Setting a specific goal when planning for weight loss improves your chances of success. You just need to be clear and definite with what you want to happen. Vague aims such as ‘I’d like to be healthier’ or ‘I need to lose a few pounds’ tend to produce half-hearted efforts and poor results. Instead, state your goal distinctly: ‘I want to lose 1 to 2 pounds this week and every week’ or ‘I want to trim my waist line from 40″ down to 38″ by the end of the month’. If you need to, write it down and put it where you will always see and read it. This way, you’ll always be reminded of what you want and need to accomplish by the end of the month, the week or even the day. Be Realistic: In establishing a definite weight loss goal, make sure that it is possible to accomplish first. How can a goal like ‘I’ll lose 15 lbs. in just a week’ happen if all of the evidence presented by research suggests that you should only burn 1 to 2 lbs in a week? Goals need to be sensible so that they are within reason to be able to obtain. What happens when you set a goal and don’t reach it no matter how hard you tried because it wasn’t really achievable? You will only get depressed and disappointed which are two of the psychological causes of obesity. And the problem just becomes a vicious cycle with no end to it. Strategizing: After carefully defining a goal of what you want to achieve with your weight loss efforts and keeping it in mind, the next step is planning on how to accomplish it. Planning involves proper scheduling of activities to be done throughout the whole day for a certain period of time including exercises, meals, sleeping and waking. It comprises of the time these activities should be done, the duration and in the case of eating meals, the food to be consumed and what amounts. This way, inappropriate spur-of-the-moments decisions can be avoided. A proper and effective weight loss plan consists of quality time for performing such activities. That is, allow enough time to meet the objectives correctly. For example, sleep should be scheduled to last for around 7 to 8 hours a day so that you’ll be able to get enough rest. Lack of sleep may cause improper eating habits the next day.Again, plans should be relatively realistic. Include only time and activities you know for yourself you can accomplish for a given period of time. Also, as you finish preparing your weight loss plan, you might want to write it down since you can’t always remember when you’re supposed to do each part of the plan. Post it in a place where you can always see and read it to remind you what your plans are for the day. Try your best not to skip anything in your scheduled plan so as not to ruin the effectivness of it. Arts and Crafts Idea

Monday, February 18th, 2008

By Karen Lavender Crafters are able to come up with arts and crafts ideas from items that many people might consider junk! Arts and crafts ideas can be found in baby food jars, paper bags, shoe boxes, cds, and egg cartons among other items easily found around the home. When you come up with arts and crafts ideas from things you have in your home, you save money on having to purchase supplies from the craft store, and you are helping the environment by recycling. Shoe boxes are the culprits of many arts and crafts ideas! You can create dioramas, doll houses, and box guitars. The arts and crafts ideas using shoe boxes are virtually endless- limited only by your imagination. You can also use shoe boxes for more traditional means, and create decorative storage boxes for your favorite things, momentos or other objects. CD’s are also great items to encourage arts and crafts ideas. They are perfectly round, and give off a wonderful shine when light hits them. The little hole in the center is perfect for stringing twine or chain through, in order to create hanging arts and crafts. Ideas include Christmas ornaments, candle holders, dreamcatchers, photo frames, clocks and magnets. Start with a CD you don’t need (like the ones you get in the mail from advertisers, or a CD that has too many scratches to work properly) and see just how many arts and crafts ideas the little shiny circle can generate! Clear thirty five millimeter film cannisters can cause many arts and crafts ideas. With a little mirrored paper board (available at a craft store), plastic wrap and cake sprinkles you can make a miniature kaleidoscope. Drill a small hole in the bottom of the film cannister. Fold the mirrored paper board into a triangle shape that will fit inside the cannister, and tape it inside. Place several cake sprinkles in the lid of the cannister and cover with a piece of plastic wrap, taped into place. Pop the cap back onto the cannister. When you look through the hole at the bottom of the cannister and turn the film cannister in your hand, the sprinkles will create shapes against the mirrored kaleidoscope. How is that for unique arts and crafts ideas! Arts and crafts ideas can come from anywhere. You can recycle your empty jelly jars and make beach scenes in a jar, a time capsule, or a candle holder. Common household items often invoke many arts and crafts ideas. Just think outside the box, and you might surprise yourself with how many arts and crafts ideas you come up with! Warren and Karen have been involved in the internet for a number of years and run several websites. They are most interested in providing opportunities for people to connect with information relating to business, health and creativity. Check out their Arts and Crafts Idea blog for more information.
