Depression and Diet

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

By Samantha Weaver For anyone questioning if their diet can be better enhanced to try to combat depression, I would advise them to get in touch with a nutritionist. While suffering with depression, a friend mentioned to me that she had begun visiting a nutritionist and that I may find it useful to consider looking at my diet. I began my research into diet and how it may be affecting me and ultimately not helping with my depression. After much research, I established that I was pyroluric (genetically determined chemical imbalance). Being a pyroluric meant that my body was producing kryptopyrroles. Kryptppyrroles have no known function in the body but are expelled and can be detected in urine. Tests are available and can be don by a nutritionist/GP at a cost of approx 11 for the test. This biochemical formation meant my body was being robbed of zinc and b6. and therefore I was suffering with a nutritional deficiency. It is also important to realise that this condition is found in about 50% of patients suffering with a mental illness. The effect of pyroluria can come in several forms (Mild, moderate or severe). This depends on the severity of the imbalance. Most pyroluric individuals show symptoms of zinc and/or B6 deficiencies. Pyrolurics commonly exhibit at least two of these problems:- 1) Pale skin 2) Food intolerance 3) Irregular menstrual cycle 4) Definite body odour 5) Poor stress control 6) Nervousness, 7) Anxiety, 8) Mood swings, 9) Severe inner tension, 10) Episodic anger (an explosive temper), 11) Poor short-term memory 12) Depression. I researched what nutrients would therefore be beneficial for my diet and established that the following would be helpful to try:- Vitamin b6 100mg am & pmZinc 30mg, am & pmManganese 10mg am & pm After further research I also established that I may have other nutritional deficiencies. I had read that by taking Vitamin C (1gram after meals) it is thought that in some mental health patients the vitamin helps to balance out deficiencies I then found out a little about Cerebral (brain) Allergies. I looked further into this and found that some people get depressed because they are eating foods which they are sensitive to. Apparently 1 in 4 people suffering with mental health problems suffer with this allergy. Some of the most common food allergens are wheat gluten and dairy products. There are tests available which can establish cerebral allergies. These are called Quantative IgG ELISA Tests and cost approximately 200 for 50 foods. Once sensitivities are established, foods should be avoided for 3mnths. This way any digestive problems can be addressed and foods being improperly absorbed can be eliminated from the persons diet/systems. Symptoms of cerebral allergies are:- History of infantile eczema History of rashes Excessive daily mood swings Frequent rapid colds Seasonal allergies Relief of symptoms when fasting Food intolerance to wheat Again, nutritional supplements are available and these include taking:- Zinc 15mg am & pm Calcium 500mg am & pm Manganese 10 mg am & pm B6 100mg am & pm Vitamin C 1gram after each meal Other research that I looked into suggested that a B6 (pyridoxine) deficiency can lead to depression. I therefore also began using both B3 (niacin) and B6 in my diet and personally noticed a change in my energy and enthusiasm. Only by visiting a qualified Nutritionists can you achieve the best results. The nutritionist will then devise a therapeutic diet and supplement programme to bring your body chemistry back into balance. Our Family’s New Motto - No More Excuses!

Monday, May 26th, 2008

By Polly Schlafhauser Up until a couple weeks ago, our family always had an excuse not to volunteer our time. There always seemed to be a soccer game, family commitment, work obligation, or birthday party to get in the way of us spending our Saturday mornings volunteering our time to help others. Well no longer, we have adopted a new family motto, No More Excuses, and this past Saturday we put it to the test. It was a dreary cold morning and all of us were tired from a long week of work and school. When the time came to get out of bed at 7 a.m. and go volunteer our help delivering food to the elderly any previous enthusiasm we had suddenly faded away. We wasted no time in coming up with a lot of reasons not to go like were tired, our beds are warm, its cold outside, we just want to hang with you and the list continued. So after my morning cry of No More Excuses!, I pulled them from bed, fed them a warm breakfast, packed them in our new gas filled minivan, and sped off to our destination. I tuned the grumbles from the back seat out and continued to cheerfully cry No more excuses!, Youll love this, trust me!, Youll feel so good when youre done! all the way to our church. At church we met up with some other families who looked just as enthused as us to be there at 8:30 a.m. on a cold dreary Saturday morning and all of us loaded into the van and off we went. It wasnt long before we started talking about all the great things in our lives and all of our past volunteer experiences and suddenly we were a little more enthused. After arriving at the charity headquarters, we were quickly put to work delivering food to low income elderly where we were greeted with smiles of hello, cries of happiness, and thanks filled with gratefulness. Suddenly our nice warm beds of a couple hours ago didnt seem so important and we ended our day of volunteering by getting just as much out of it as those we helped. So the next time your family has the opportunity to volunteer, what will be your excuse? Remember, your kids will thank you for the little things later. Married for a Hundred Years

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

By Michael Brickey, Ph.D. Someday the cover of Time magazine will have a picture of the first couple to be married 100 years. Reporters will flock to them to ask their secret. But you dont have to wait to learn their secret. Research has already given us a good idea of what helps marriages last. By the way the current record, according to the Guinnes Book of World Records is 86 years and is held by two couples. One was a Maine couple who were both born in 1725 and married from 1743 until the wife died. The other was an Indian couple who married when both were five years old and were married until the husband died in 1940. While much of the literature on marriage is just opinion, there is one researcher whose work is outstandingpsychologist John Gottman, Ph.D. For over three decades Gottman has carefully observed, videotaped, and studied social and physiological responses (e.g. heart rate) of more than 2,000 of couples. His research has found several principles that distinguish marriages that work. After all, marriages may be made in heaven, but a lot of the details have to be worked out on earth. One principle is that successful couples know a lot about each other. For example, do you know your spouses (or paramours) favorite movie, book, flower, dessert, or perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon? If not, ask. Another principle is that they have fond memories about their relationship. Every marriage has its difficult times and challenges. In successful marriages, people savor and fondly remember the good times and let the bad memories wither or see the humor in them. Another principle is that the couples have at least five times as many positive interactions as negative interactions. This is simple conditioning and common sense. If many of the interactions were negative, who would want to stay in the marriage? Yet another principle is that couples have fond feeling for each other, admire each other, and let their partners influence them. Have you told your partner lately how much you admire him or her? One of the most interesting contemporary marriages is James Carville and Mary Matalins marriage. He was President Clintons campaign manager and is a frequent television commentator. She was deputy campaign manager for George Bush Sr. and has her own television and radio program. They have coauthored a book and a baby. Do they have nothing in common because they are passionate spokespeople for opposing parties, or do they have a lot in common because of their passion for politics? Whether couples have much in common has more to do with what they perceive than objective measures. Couples who stay together look for commonalities and respect and tolerate differences. Each of these is in your control. If you dont believe me, ask your spouse if you could do better. If you are going to stay married, it is certainly worth making your marriage an enjoyable and rewarding marriage. As Gottman put it, A romantic night out really turns up the heat only when a couple has kept the pilot light burning by staying in touch in the little ways. Gottmans books can be very helpful and would be good to read and discuss with your spouse. His books include: Why Marriages Succeed or Fail and The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work. Gottmans and other marital principles are also covered in the chapter on marriage in Defy Aging. Unfortunately, most Americans dont place a high enough priority on our marriages and martial skills to make a marriage last even a few decades. And even if we do, we may have to deal with a spouse dying. Consequently, we need to become very skilled at beginning and ending relationships. If every time a relationship doesnt work out our lives sound like a country and western song, we will wear ourselves out. Rather we want to be able to say something like: Im glad we had the relationship. We both grew a lot and learned a lot and became better persons. I hope we can remain friends. What do I need to do now? Benjamin Franklins advice to a person starting a new relationship would be, Keep your eyes wide open before marriage, half shut afterward. Dr. Michael Brickey, The Anti-Aging Psychologist, teaches people to think, feel, look and be more youthful. He is an inspiring keynote speaker and the Oprah-featured author of Defy Aging and 52 baby steps to Grow Young. The Difference Between Masters and Newbies

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

By Vittorio Norman Some of us have heard dating “gurus” give advice on dating. You will notice that the seasoned gurus have a very clear and honest way of speaking. You feel like you’re listening to a friend describe a passion. But novices and guys who are still in the “technique” stage, sound like computer repair men. They might be successful BUT they are confusing what actually works with their analysis of what they think works. They haven’t yet cut the “fat” out and boiled their game down to the essence - which is what mastery level is about. Masters speak simply and clearly, and even a bit philosophically. You learn more from them because they teach you where you have to end up, therefore cutting down on your learning time. Newer guys speak abstractly and sometimes in a robotic fashion. They get wound up by the tactics that did this or did that (presumably). Learn from them and you will take the long way to learning, in fact you will be learning alongside them, including learning from their mistakes. There’s hundreds of guys teaching tactics. What you want to do is find the few successful guys that are not, and learn from them. Play Instruments are Party Fun Music to Get the Kids and Adults Dancing

Friday, May 9th, 2008

By Gail Leino Add a lot of flavor to your party with some easy musical instruments. Guests are more inclined to get involved on the dance floor if theyve got an instrument in hand an easy beat to move to. Maracas are one of the simplest instruments to play. All you need to do is shake them and they make noise for you. Get some maracas for your next Mardi Gras party and stage your own Mardi Gras parade with all the guests shaking their maracas. There are lots of maracas in shiny metallic colors with silver or gold tinsel hanging from the ends. Or you can pick up some genuine wooden maracas with pretty coastal scenes painted on them. A package of one dozen neon maracas makes for great party favors to hand out and the neon will glow under a black light. The tambourine is another easy instrument to play even if it doesnt get many really long solos in musical scores. You can certainly hand out a few at your next party to create a musical sound. Neon tambourines also add a lot of color to your party. They come in neon green, pink and yellow and are about five and a half inches in diameter. If you are looking for something that can be given as a party favor then pick up some mini tambourines. These are only three and a half inches in diameter and make really cute additions to the loot bag. Ukuleles are a little more involved as far as instruments go, but they are still easy to pluck a tune on and they make great additions to your tropical themed party. A mini Ukulele positioned just so as a table centerpiece will add much to your dcor. You can also pick up some fun inflatable instruments to scatter around your party area. This decoration works well for rock and roll parties. Techno Dress-up: Personalizing Your Phone With Themes

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Philip_Nicosia]Philip Nicosia Bored with your phone? Give it a makeover with a unique phone theme. Phone themes are coordinated background images, color schemes, animations and ring tones. Most units come with a few phone themes, but why settle for something that several other million already have? (That would defeat the purpose of personalizing it, wouldnt it?). Instead, head for the Internet. There youll find enough phone themes to dress up your mobile every day of the week, if you wanted to. Most of the phone themes youll find on the Web are grouped according to category. For animal lovers, there are themes inspired by wildlife, marine life, dogs, cats, even exotic birds. These bundles usually carry a photo of a creature that will be used as a wall paper display, a ring or message tone thats lifted from the sound it makes, and color schemes inspired by Nature. Just think of the paws-ibillities! Admire a celebrity? Have her lovely face greet you from your phone each time you dial a number. (Its the next best thing to actually having her number.) Bundles will sometimes include theme songs from a movie, or if available, a message alert recorded with her voice. Indulge your Inner Geek with Star Wars or Final Fantasy phone themes, or any of the thousands dedicated to things like computer or arcade games, science fiction movies, and popular series like X Files or Lost. Girls can personalize their phone themes too, with sizzling-hot pictures of the biggest Hollywood hunks, uber-feminine floral settings, or funky retro styles. Now you can text your friends about your date against a hot-pink background on one day, or set your ring tone to a calming Zen instrumental piece the next. Its all about exercising your right to bring style to your mobile, which we all know is really a functional lifestyle accessory and not just a piece of equipment for you to send and receive calls. Let it reflect your mood, your personality, your image-of-the-moment. And unlike fashion collections, you dont have to wait for a change of the seasons to transform your look! When downloading themes, you have to check if its compatible with your unit. Some themes are configured for specific phones, and its best to avoid the disappointment of browsing through a category only to find out that you wont be able to use it. Some of the websites will give you the option of signing up for an account to access features that pre-screen your options so only those that are compatible with your phone will be displayed in your search results. And contrary to popular belief, installing a phone theme wont necessarily shorten your phones battery life. Thats because phone themes are very efficient, and usually come with utilities that optimize the use of power. So even if its animated, you wont really feel the impact on your battery life. They may, however, take up some storage space, especially those that come with a lot of features like animated backgrounds, and several long ring tones and message tones. If your phone has limited memory capabilities, you can store your downloads on a memory device. Ringtones. Do Something Smart and Unique: Earth-Friendly Wedding Decorations

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

By Amy Spade It might seem wasteful to you to decorate and use all of these cut flowers in order to make a big room beautiful for one night. Are there any environmentally friendly options? Change the setting The easiest way to keep from using cut flowers and dried petals is to have your reception and ceremony outside. This sounds like trouble in the making, but its a lot easier than it sounds. If you have a large space in someones yard or in a park(with everyones permission), you can set up a large tent for the reception hall and even the ceremony if youd like. Since guests will be under a roof, there is little need for worrying about the weather and they can still see the beauty of the outside as they eat. Find a beautiful setting and light some lanterns around the tent, it creates a soft glow well into the evening. New ingredients Of course, if youre looking for the most earth friendly eating options, you will want to select the buffet option with a limited portion of food. Any additional food can be donated to the local shelter if youd like. You will not be using any plastic forks or cups, so you will need a lot of glasses and silverware to make sure that you dont run out. Napkins can be cloth and washed instead of thrown out. As decorations, you can spread lavender along the tops of the tables and then include small tea lights as well as larger candles as needed. Find candles that burn clean (as soy ones do), and these are quite friendly to use. If youre looking for a centerpiece, you can choose to have tall silver or gold vases in the middle (metal) and fill them with ice and a bottle of champagne for the table. This looks great, plus it serves a function. You can then give away the vases for planters at the end of the night. Using kegs instead of individual beer cans is a great way to cut back on wasteeven if it can be recycled. Recycling tends to be more and more difficult to do as the night goes on. Let the conversation and the happiness decorate the night, not things that you will only throw away the next day. Being earth friendly isnt difficult when you think of other ways that you can use things after the wedding is over.
